Laser Hair Removal
OCP Medical Center specializes in the permanent removal of unwanted hair on the face, legs, (under)arms and rest of the body, performed by experienced laser hair technicians.
Many men and women find the recurring process of shaving and depilation annoying. Using a laser hair removal machine, we can reduce the hair growth significantly. For women, this may be unwanted hair growth in the face, underarms, bikini line and on the legs. For men, this might be on the face, chest, abdomen, shoulders and back. Overall, most areas can be treated using a Laser Hair Removal machine.

Benefits of Laser Hair Removal
Permanent reduction of unwanted darkly colored hairs. Because the Lightsheer Desire targets pigment in the hair follicle, light or white colored hairs do not respond well to treatment.

Laser Hair Removal at OCP Medical Center can be done for almost all areas on the body.
At OCP Medical Center, we use the latest, state-of-the-art laser hair removal machine Lumenis LightSheer Desire, which is considered the gold standard in laser hair hair removal.
The Lumenis LightSheer Desire is a laser that allows us to treat almost any skin type. The energy that is emitted from the laser hair removal machine is only absorbed by the pigment cells in the hair. The skin and surrounding tissue of the hair follicle do not absorb the energy beam of the laser. This makes laser hair removal a safe and effective treatment for unwanted hair.
When the laser beam reaches the pigment in the hair follicle, the energy of the laser is converted into warmth. The hair shaft and bulb get damaged, so that the hair can not grow anymore.
Before the treatment, the therapist will take pictures for your medical record. During the treatment you will wear protective glasses for your eyes. The treatment duration depends on the treated area(s), but typically lasts between 5 minutes to 1 hour.
Many of the visible hairs will fall out within 2 to 3 weeks after the treatment. Laser hair removal can be done without anesthesia. The Lumenis LightSheer Desire uses 2 special treatment techniques to minimize pain during and after the treatment.:
- High-Speed Integrated Technology (HIT) uses a unique vacuum mechanism that activates the skin’s tactile and pressure receptors to inhibit the transmission of pain.
- ChillTip mproves patient comfort by cooling the skin prior to treatment and continuously cooling it throughout the treatment.
The first hours after the laser hair removal treatment, you might experience some redness in the treated area. You can reduce this by cooling the area as much as possible. In rare cases small blisters might appear in the treated area, which will disappear within a few days. Directly after the treatment, you may continue with your normal daily activities. You must avoid sun exposure for up to 6 weeks after the treatment.
Sometimes thicker hair might appear in the treated area. These are not new hairs, but hairs that were damaged by the laser. They will fall out by themselves, but you can also shave them after 2 days
Not everybody will see results after laser hair removal. Hair color and skin color are an important factor. Dark hair contains more melanine. And because the melanin absorbs the laser energy, laser hair removal works better in people with dark brown or black hair. The LightSheer Desire uses special treatment protocols for people with darker skin, to increase the effectivity.
Multiple treatment sessions will be required for permanent hair reduction. Usually 6 to 8 sessions are enough to see optimal results.
The Lumenis LightSheer Desire is a very safe laser. After the treatment you might experience some redness and swelling, but this disappears within a few hours up to maximum one day. Sometimes there might be some discoloration of the skin: the skin gets either lighter or darker. This discoloration is mostly temporary and disappears over time.
More information on Laser Hair Removal
Laser Hair Removal is also called permanent hair removal, but it is not guaranteed that no more hair will return. Usually, 6 to 8 treatments are required to see a reduction of up to 80% lasting many years.
Excessive hair growth is called hypertrichosis or hirstism. Hypertrichosis is excessive hair growth over and above the normal for the age, sex and race of an individual, in contrast to hirsutism, which is excess hair growth in women following a male distribution pattern.
Blonde, red and gray hairs can not be treated using laser hair removal.
